Leviticus 25:51 NLT
“If many years still remain until the jubilee, they will repay the proper proportion of what they received when they sold themselves.”
Avoid unnecessary hassle
A Yoruba adage states, “igba meji ni eko awin ma yo ni. Igba ti a ba nje ati igba ti a san owo re,” which translates to, “twice a person is filled from buying ‘eko’ (a type of corn pudding) on credit – the first time is when it is being eaten and the second is when the payment is made.” This proverb highlights the dual satisfaction derived from consuming the food and facing the obligation to settle the debt.
In the referenced scripture, the Lord instructs that the price for release from servitude is not fixed but fluctuates because it depends on how many years remain until the Jubilee year. When someone sells themselves into servitude due to financial hardship and subsequently wishes to regain their freedom, they cannot simply offer any amount they desire; the buyer, who initially acquired their services, is not obligated to accept arbitrary repayment terms.
The key aspect here is that the refund must align with the value of what was received when the individual sold themselves into servitude. However, the intriguing point is that there is no precise standard for determining what constitutes an appropriate refund. This ambiguity underscores the importance of being prudent and cautious regarding decisions fueled by instant gratification. The desire for immediate fulfillment can lead to unforeseen consequences in the future. Therefore, we must consider the long-term implications of our choices rather than merely seeking short-term relief or enjoyment.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly seek Your guidance and strength in making choices that steer me away from pursuits that offer only temporary comfort or quick fixes. Please help me focus on endeavours and paths that provide long-lasting relief, fostering inner peace and genuine well-being rather than momentarily escaping my struggles. Please grant me the wisdom to recognize and prioritize what truly benefits my life in the long run. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
