Leviticus 25:50 NLT
“They will negotiate the price of their freedom with the person who bought them. The price will be based on the number of years from the time they were sold until the next Year of Jubilee—whatever it would cost to hire a worker for that period of time.”
Take the gift of salvation in Christ
For the native-born Israelites who found themselves in the unfortunate position of selling themselves into slavery, the Lord emphasizes His sovereign right to reclaim their freedom. Yet, this path to liberation is difficult, as the individual who has sold himself must now engage in the complex process of negotiating a release price. This negotiation is particularly striking because there is no intermediary involved; God does not assume the role of a mediator as He once did for the Israelites during their enslavement in Egypt.
Moreover, this scenario highlights an intriguing lesson about the perils of impulsive decisions. Had a native-born Israelite not sold himself, there would not have been a need to negotiate his release price. The fact that there is a release price implies that he would not go for free. The unsettling dynamic created by the hasty decision is the seller finds themselves utterly at the buyer’s mercy. This is a profound reminder: do not underestimate your worth or neglect the divine dignity and glory God has bestowed upon you. For those native-born individuals who failed to appreciate this intrinsic value, the repercussions were severe; their worth was ultimately diminished to the equivalent of hiring labourers at a mere cost for the years remaining until the Year of Jubilee, a time of restoration and freedom for all Israelites.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a heart full of gratitude for the incredible sacrifice You made by sending Your Son, Jesus, to die for my sins. I recognize that His act of love has given me the priceless gift of salvation, and I pray earnestly that I will always remain mindful of the value. Help me live each day with this awareness, making wise choices honouring the grace You have bestowed upon me. May I never find myself in a situation where I would reflect with regret, wishing I had fully embraced and appreciated this free gift. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
