Leviticus 25:39 NLT
“If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell himself to you, do not treat him as a slave.”

Do not treat him as a slave
God does not distinguish among the Israelites regarding their susceptibility to hardship, which underscores that any of them could find themselves in dire situations. In times of extended lack, individuals may resort to decisions that seem incomprehensible to outsiders. The scripture mentions that extreme poverty might compel an Israelite to offer himself for sale to a more prosperous fellow Israelite, reflecting the desperate choices one might make when faced with insurmountable challenges.

Interestingly, the Lord does not provide explicit instructions to prevent individuals from entering such servitude, highlighting the gift of free will He has bestowed upon humanity. Each person is granted the capacity to choose between right and wrong, illustrating the importance of personal agency under challenging circumstances. Crucially, the relationship between the buyer and the seller, both of whom are Israelites, should be governed by kindness and respect.

The scripture emphasizes that just because one Israelite suffers and chooses a path of servitude, it does not mean that the buyer should treat him as inferior. The Lord calls upon the buyer to embody compassion and empathy in all his dealings, reminding us that our actions should reflect understanding and kindness towards one another, especially in times of struggle. Compassion lies at the heart of our relationships, and we must uplift rather than oppress those in need.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for Your guidance and strength as I strive to uplift those who are vulnerable and in need of support. Please grant me the wisdom to approach each person with kindness and compassion, ensuring that I treat everyone with the dignity they deserve, regardless of their circumstances or social status. Please help me to become a source of encouragement and hope, fostering an environment where all individuals feel valued and respected. In Jesus’s name, I pray for the ability to recognize the struggles of others and to respond with a loving heart. Amen.
