Leviticus 25:38 NLT
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.”

The nature of divine grace
When the Lord liberated the people of Israel from their bondage in Egypt, He did not leave them to wander in the wilderness or abandon them to find their way. Instead, the Lord graciously bestowed upon them the land of Canaan. This act of giving by the Lord underscores the truth that He owns all creation, as said in Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it; the world and all who live in it.”

Importantly, this gift was not conditioned on the Israelites’ merit or past behaviour; instead, it was an act of grace. God granted them the land of Canaan while they were still entrenched in sin and rebellion, echoing the redemptive act of Jesus Christ, who, as stated in Romans 5:8, died for us while we were still sinners. This parallel illustrates the profound nature of divine grace: unconditional and unearned.

Moreover, the liberation of Israel served a dual purpose: it was also a call to worship the One true God, the I AM WHO I AM. During their years of enslavement, the people of Israel had become disconnected from their worship of God, losing sight of His sovereignty and power. The idols of Egypt had proven powerless to save them in their time of need, as they were mere creations of human hands. In contrast, the Lord, who can act and intervene in human history, responded to their cries for deliverance.

God’s desire to be their God was not an attempt to dominate or manipulate their lives but to guide them toward righteousness and spiritual restoration. His leadership aimed to establish a relationship built on trust, obedience, and love. By freeing them from the shackles of slavery, He sought to lead them along the path of holiness, ultimately restoring their souls and fulfilling His divine purpose in their lives. The act of liberation and the gift of Canaan were steps toward a deeper communion between God and His people, instilling in them a sense of identity and belonging in His eternal plan.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a heart full of gratitude, thanking You for rescuing me from my struggles and granting me the blessings akin to “the land of Canaan” that You promised to Your people. I pray earnestly that I will remain steadfast in my devotion, allowing no idol or distraction to take my allegiance away from You, the Only Wise God. Help me recognize and resist the temptations that seek to draw me away from You and guide me in living a life that honours You above all else. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
