Leviticus 25:35 NLT
“If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you.”
Support as you would a foreigner
Certain conditions in life, while prevalent, are not inevitable or mandatory experiences for everyone. The language of today’s referenced scripture emphasizes this distinction by placing poverty within that category. Notably, the Lord does not state “when” poverty will occur but rather “if” it should arise. This small yet significant word change carries profound implications.
Moreover, it is essential to recognize that the Lord does not imply blame or judgment should be directed at anyone experiencing poverty. Instead, He emphasizes the responsibility of financially secure people to step forward and provide support should the need arise. Essentially, the Lord calls for us to be our brother’s keeper, embodying compassion and solidarity within our communities.
However, the manner of support that the well-to-do are encouraged to offer should reflect the same level of generosity and concern as they would provide to a foreigner or a temporary worker in need. This approach underscores the principle of equity; it calls on us to apply fairness and impartiality in our actions. We must resist the temptation to show favouritism based on personal relationships or social status and remain vigilant to the struggles of our brothers and sisters.
It is also important to note that the Lord does not expect the well-to-do to intervene in every need in people’s lives but rather to offer assistance in specific instances when individuals are genuinely unable to support themselves. This reinforces the idea that help should be targeted and thoughtful, aimed at empowering those in need rather than simply providing a temporary solution.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a humble heart, asking for Your abundant blessings in my life. Please guide me to not only have enough for my needs but to overflow with generosity so I can uplift and support those around me. Your Word reminds us that while poverty is a reality for many, it is not Your desire for anyone to live in lack. Please grant me Your divine protection and guidance, shielding me from hardships and helping me to thrive in all aspects of my life. With Your grace, may I become a vessel of hope and kindness to others in my community. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
