Leviticus 25:31 NLT
“But a house in a village—a settlement without fortified walls—will be treated like property in the countryside. Such a house may be bought back at any time, and it must be returned to the original owner in the Year of Jubilee.”
We must do the right thing!
In primary 2, my seatmate and I had identical pencils. One day after school, I absentmindedly grabbed his pencil, thinking it was mine, while he mistakenly took mine without realizing it. It wasn’t until I got home that I opened my bag and discovered the mix-up. When my mother saw the pencil, her expression turned serious. She emphasized respecting other people’s belongings, firmly insisting that I return my seatmate’s pencil that day. After a long search, we finally located his house at around 7 pm. When I handed his pencil back to him, I felt a mix of relief and responsibility. I finally retrieved mine.
Reflecting on this experience, I see parallels in the second sentence of the referenced scripture, where the Lord asserts that a house—or, by extension, anything of value—may be repurchased at any time. Just as my mother insisted I return my seatmate’s pencil and reclaim mine that night; there is no time that one can’t do the right thing. If my seatmate had come to request his pencil, I would have had no choice but to oblige him. Furthermore, the Lord emphasizes that regardless of whether the original owner requests it, the buyer has an obligation to return the item. Friends, the Lord has illuminated our responsibilities; let’s not wait for reminders or nudges before we act on them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I ask for your guidance and strength as I strive to do what is right, regardless of whether anyone is watching. Please help me remain faithful to the sanctity of Your words in all situations and have the courage to make decisions that reflect Your teachings. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
