Leviticus 25:21 NLT
“Be assured that I will send my blessing for you in the sixth year, so the land will produce a crop large enough for three years.”
Large enough for three years
In the previous verse, the Lord revealed a question that may have weighed heavily on the hearts of the people of Israel. This query focused on their provision in the seventh year, a time designated by God during which they were instructed to neither plant nor harvest crops. The gravity of this divine command likely stirred anxiety among the Israelites, prompting them to wonder how they would sustain themselves without the usual agricultural efforts. Despite their past experiences in the wilderness—where God had miraculously provided manna from heaven and quail for sustenance—it is noteworthy that the God of all creation, I AM WHO I AM, did not take offence at their doubts. Instead, He recognized their human tendencies and doused their concern with His response.
An important lesson we can glean from this narrative revolves around the identity of our source of assurance. For the Israelites, that assurance came directly from God Himself. Friends, when God guarantees your success in any undertaking, you can rest assured that there is no room for fear or distress. Additionally, it’s significant to highlight that the blessings God promised them were abundant enough to sustain them for three years. Remarkably, God did not instruct them to use any fertilizers or to make sacrificial offerings, which often led us to believe that we must perform specific acts or give material goods to earn His favour. Instead, He emphasizes that what He truly desires from us is obedience.
This principle echoes the message in Isaiah 1:19 (NLT), where God reassures us, “If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat”. Obedience to His commands opens the door to His provision and abundance, reminding us that our trust in Him should overshadow our fears about the future.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, only Your assurance can calm my fears about the present and future, especially when I strive to do Your will. You declared the outcome to the people of Israel from the beginning so they could focus on You. Please grant me the same clarity. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
