Leviticus 25:6 NLT
“But you may eat whatever the land produces on its own during its Sabbath. This applies to you, your male and female servants, your hired workers, and the temporary residents who live with you.”
‭‭
Freedom to eat
It is important to emphasize that the Lord did not prohibit the eating of crops that grew spontaneously during the seventh year, a designated time of complete rest known as the Sabbath year. Instead, He granted the people of Israel the freedom to decide how to source their food during this period. They could partake in the Lord’s bountiful provisions, rely on the supplies they had carefully stored during the preceding six years, or purchase food from others if needed. However, why endure unnecessary stress when the Lord’s abundant provision was readily available to all?

Moreover, the Lord’s provision was designed to be inclusive and not restricted to a particular class or group of individuals. No distinction was made between those who had the means to consume and those who did not; His blessings were meant for everyone. Just as these provisions were made available to families, they were also intended for male and female servants, hired workers, and even temporary residents or sojourners who lived among them. This instruction was critical because it does not allow wickedness or selfishness toward any group.

The Lord set clear expectations to ensure no one would be marginalized or excluded from His generosity. Hence, no one could rise the next day and claim otherwise, potentially making life more challenging for the vulnerable members of the community. By establishing these guidelines, the Lord reinforced the importance of compassion and equity, prompting the Israelites to care for one another and extend His provisions to all in their midst.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for the strength and compassion to extend mercy to everyone I encounter, particularly those who are vulnerable and in need of support. Help me to mirror the boundless grace and kindness You have shown me throughout my life. Teach me to recognize the struggles of others, to approach them with empathy, and to offer a helping hand or a listening ear, just as You have always embraced and uplifted me in my times of need. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
