Leviticus 25:5 NLT
“And don’t store away the crops that grow on their own or gather the grapes from your unpruned vines. The land must have a year of complete rest.”
A year of complete rest
It is a fundamental aspect of human nature to hoard food, often driven by an underlying fear of the future. In today’s referenced scripture, the Lord provided specific instructions to the people of Israel, particularly those engaged in agriculture. He commanded them not to store away the crops that would naturally grow in the seventh year, which was a year of rest for the land as ordained by God. By instructing them not to plant during this year, the Lord aimed to cultivate their trust in Him to provide for their immediate needs.
Additionally, by forbidding the storage of the spontaneous harvest from the seventh year, God emphasized the importance of faith in His provision for the future. He understood that the temptation to gather and secure these crops would be strong, especially given the uncertainty of subsequent years. However, His desire was for them to learn reliance on His ongoing presence and care.
God is a living, active force in the present, capable of managing the future. If this year has been one of utter rest for you, possibly due to prolonged unemployment or other challenges, remember that the Lord calls you to place your faith in Him regarding your current circumstances and future needs. Trusting in His plans allows us to exchange anxiety for peace, assuring us that God’s provision will be sufficient for every season of our lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly seek Your guidance and strength to obey Your will, even when straying may appear justifiable or tempting. I pray earnestly that You will meet all my needs—be it spiritual, emotional, or physical—so that I may continue to serve You with a heart full of gratitude and faith. Please help me to trust in Your timing and provision, knowing that You always have my best interests at heart. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
