Leviticus 25:15 NLT
“When you buy land from your neighbor, the price you pay must be based on the number of years since the last jubilee. The seller must set the price by taking into account the number of years remaining until the next Year of Jubilee.”
Fairness and equity
No human endeavour can ever catch God off guard or surprise Him. Today’s referenced scripture highlights God’s omniscience and comprehensive awareness of the business transactions that occur among humans. A significant insight from this passage is that while the Lord permitted His people to buy and sell their allotted land, He also established clear parameters to guide these transactions. This divine instruction was not one-sided; it encompassed both the buyer and the seller, reinforcing the idea that God desires the well-being of all His children, regardless of their roles in any business deal.
Specifically, the Lord directed the buyer to offer a price based on the years since the last Jubilee, a solemn occasion that resets ownership and restores equity in the community. Conversely, the seller was instructed to determine a price considering the number of years remaining until the next Year of Jubilee, which serves as a significant benchmark in the economic and spiritual life of the community. This approach ensures fairness and equity, reflecting God’s just nature in all matters of trade and commerce.
The paramount factor in establishing the price of land is the Year of Jubilee—a time when debts are forgiven, and properties are returned to their original owners, allowing for a fresh start. We find our true Jubilee in Christ in a broader and more profound sense. Unlike the ancient observance that occurred every fiftieth year, our Jubilee in Christ is a continuous spiritual reality, available at every moment for all who have embraced Him as their Lord and Savior. Through Him, we experience liberation, restoration, and the promise of new beginnings, highlighting God’s unwavering commitment to our welfare and spiritual prosperity.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me to wholeheartedly accept and embrace every instruction and teaching You have established through Christ Jesus. Please grant me the wisdom to understand their significance in shaping my life and the courage to apply them in my daily endeavours. In doing so, may my actions reflect Your divine purpose and ultimately bring glory to Your name, not just in my life but also as a testament to others around me. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
