Leviticus 24:3 NLT
“This is the lampstand that stands in the Tabernacle, in front of the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant. Aaron must keep the lamps burning in the Lord’s presence all night. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation.”
Permanent law for you
Christians do not possess a physical temple like the ancient Israelites did. Instead, our bodies serve as the temples of God, as indicated in Scripture. This raises the question: Does Leviticus 24:3 still hold relevance for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, particularly the aspect where it says, “This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation”? The answer is yes, but the application differs significantly from how it applied to Aaron.
Just as Aaron was responsible for tending to the lamps in the Tabernacle, every Christian is called to ensure that the light within their temple remains lit. One of the specific instructions given to Aaron was that the lamps should never lack oil, especially during the night hours. This signifies that as Christians, our light must shine continuously—not only when circumstances are favourable, and everything seems to be going according to plan but also during the challenging times or “night” seasons when the future feels uncertain, and our path seems unclear.
In Matthew 5:16, Jesus encourages us with the words, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” It is crucial for us to reflect on this: Are we actively keeping our light shining? Are we ensuring that our faith, love, and good deeds continue to illuminate the world around us, even in the darkest times? Friends, let us commit to maintaining our spiritual light, allowing it to shine brightly for all to see.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You desire that my light never goes out. Please help me avoid becoming complacent about keeping my light shining, especially when the circumstances around me are gloomy and dark. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
