Leviticus 24:2 NLT
“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.”
Highest quality
It is often said that the more you look, the less you see, yet this adage does not hold true when studying God’s word. This is because the deeper one delves into the scriptures, the more profound understanding and insight one gains. In 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18, Paul says: “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” This passage highlights the transformative power of engaging with God’s word, which unveils layers of truth and allows believers to reflect His glory in their lives.
Reflecting upon the referenced scripture raises intriguing questions about the people of Israel and their ability to produce pure oil from pressed olives. The act of extracting oil, which was essential for their lamps, requires not just physical labour but also the right quality of olives and a meticulous process. Understanding who God is, it becomes clear that He did not ask the Israelites to accomplish what they could not achieve or to depend on resources they did not possess. This reinforces the truth that God is not only aware of our limitations but also equips us with the necessary capacity to fulfill His requests. When we are called to undertake tasks or responsibilities, we can trust that God has already provided us with the ability and the means to succeed.
Another layer of insight can be drawn from the comparison between low-quality and high-quality olive oil. The low-quality oil, though easier and cheaper to obtain, likely required little effort to produce. However, its low yield would require large quantities to keep the lamp consistently burning, reflecting a less impactful light source. In contrast, high-quality oil, derived from carefully selected olives and requiring a more rigorous extraction process, burns longer and provides a brighter, more enduring light. This serves as a meaningful metaphor for our spiritual journeys. Friends, while attaining excellence may feel arduous and demanding, focusing on the end result is crucial—the glory it brings to God. The sacrifices and labour we invest in our spiritual growth are not merely for our benefit; they illuminate His greatness and showcase His work within us.
