Leviticus 24:2 NLT
“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.”
‭‭
*Collective responsibility*
While Moses was the intermediary through whom God liberated the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, the referenced scripture emphasizes that he never exploited this position for personal gain. Throughout his leadership, Moses distinguished himself by never requesting anything from the people that God had not commanded him to ask.

In the referenced scripture, the Lord unequivocally commanded the Israelites to perform a task collectively for His Tabernacle. Although the Lord designated the management of the Tabernacle—the sacred place of worship—to Aaron and his descendants, providing items for the place was not their responsibility. No doubt, priestly duties and responsibilities were entrusted to them; however, there was also a collective responsibility assigned to the entire community to maintain the Tabernacle’s needs, particularly concerning providing the oil necessary to keep the lamps alight.

Interestingly, God did not stipulate the precise amounts of pure oil from pressed olives that each person or family was required to bring. This absence of specific quantities suggests that the Lord wanted the people to have the freedom to contribute generously and according to their hearts. The requirement was not merely for any type of oil but rather for the highest quality—pure oil of pressed olives—indicating the importance of their offerings in sustaining the sanctity and continual light of the Tabernacle. Thus, offering oil became not just a duty but a meaningful opportunity for the community to participate in honouring God and ensuring that His presence remained among them.
