Leviticus 24:10 NLT
“One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father came out of his tent and got into a fight with one of the Israelite men.”
Identity Crisis
When the people of Israel were liberated from bondage through divine intervention, the scriptures indicate that several non-Israelites chose to accompany them on their journey. Today’s referenced scripture centers on the behaviour of one of the non-Israelite people who left Egypt when the Lord presented the opportunity.
One striking aspect is that the man was the offspring of a union between an Israelite woman and an Egyptian man. Yet, this union presented a unique challenge in terms of identity. A careful review of the scripture reveals that the man at the heart of this narrative lacked a clear national identity, as he was neither explicitly referred to as an Israelite nor an Egyptian, leading to questions about his heritage and belonging.
Also, note that he had a dwelling among the Israelites, yet something drove him to initiate a fight with them. The scripture says he “came out of his tent and got into a fight.” This situation prompts a reflection on the idea of identity. True members of the same body may disagree, but not to the extent of altercation or picking up a fight against their brethren. Although the man lived in the camp with other Israelites, he probably didn’t share their views and values.
Therefore, if we genuinely consider ourselves members of the same body of Christ, it becomes essential to foster an environment where discord, hostility, and conflict are absent. The message is clear: unity and peace should prevail among us, reflecting our shared faith and commitment to one another rather than allowing division to take root in our community.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I ask that You open my eyes to recognize and identify every alliance or relationship in my life that nurtures the works of the flesh—those influences that pull me away from Your truth and hinder my spiritual growth. Grant me the strength and wisdom through the Holy Spirit to address these challenges head-on, empowering me to make choices that align with Your will. So help me, God. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
