Leviticus 24:1 NLT
“The Lord said to Moses,”
The Lord said to Moses
Even though the above verse stands out as one of the shortest in the scripture and may even be seen as an incomplete sentence, its depth of insight is timeless and profound. First, consider the context in which this moment occurs. It’s intriguing to note that Moses didn’t engage in any extraordinary acts or rituals before the Lord decided to take an interest in him. When the Lord spoke to Moses, he was isolated on a mountaintop, a setting commonly associated with spiritual encounters. Instead, it occurred while he was amidst the bustle of the camp, surrounded by the other members of the Israelite community. This teaches us that God can communicate with us even amid our daily lives and communal responsibilities.
Another noteworthy aspect is the repeated phrase “The Lord said to Moses.” Each time this phrase is mentioned, something significant follows—a revelation, instruction, or command that carries weight and importance. It’s essential to recognize that the Lord initiated this communication with Moses. This raises a thought-provoking question: What about Moses compelled God to speak directly to him? One possible explanation is that the Lord understood Moses’ integrity and commitment to fidelity in carrying out His directives. God knew Moses would faithfully honour and follow His instructions.
Moreover, the verse highlights a crucial point regarding the nature of communication between the Lord and Moses—there was no intermediary involved. The Lord did not relay His messages through an angelic figure or translator. Instead, Moses received the divine words directly. This direct line of communication signifies a profound relationship between the Creator of heaven and earth and His chosen servant. The fact that Moses didn’t require a translator to understand God speaks volumes about the intimacy of their connection. It reminds us that God has designed all languages and can communicate His will directly to us.
