Leviticus 23:36 NLT
“For seven days you must present special gifts to the Lord. The eighth day is another holy day on which you present your special gifts to the Lord. This will be a solemn occasion, and no ordinary work may be done that day.”
Do it at the beginning and the end
How often do you think about God? You might readily say “all the time,” and you wouldn’t be wrong. However, what if the question becomes how often you think about God—not what you want from Him, but what you can offer Him without expecting anything in return? What do you think the frequency would be?
A significant aspect of the festival is that the Lord instructed them to bring special offerings. So, is it each person or as a community? It seems the Lord likely addressed each person as part of a community because not everyone will have the wherewithal to procure the animals for the burnt offerings, emphasizing unity and eliminating competition in the place of worship. The fact bulls and rams were not required from each person shows that the Lord, the I AM WHO I AM, is not a bloodthirsty God. Friends, what’s your perspective about God?
Lastly, the Lord required that the festival end with another holy day on the eighth day. Similar to the holy day at the beginning of the festival, no ordinary work was to be done on this day, which signified a sense of solemnity. Friends, there is no better way to start and end any activity than by being solemn—not out of routine, but because one has thoughtfully reflected on the goodness of the Lord and can genuinely recognize that everything has happened because it is God’s will.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that my love for You remains genuine so that reverencing You at the start and end of every activity becomes intrinsic to me. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
