Leviticus 23:8 NLT
“For seven days you must present special gifts to the Lord. On the seventh day, the people must again stop all their ordinary work to observe an official day for holy assembly.”
Full attention and devotion
Our God is not self-centred; otherwise, He would not have intentionally created humanity. This principle is illustrated in the guidelines given for the celebration of the festival of unleavened bread. Interestingly, the Lord did not require the Israelites to cease all labour activities during this festival. Instead, He allowed them to continue their work from the second to the sixth day. This allowance highlights a profound aspect of God’s character: His concern for our well-being and needs.
Why is this important? It is essential to recognize that the timing of the festival of unleavened bread in the Old Testament coincided with a crucial agricultural period for the harvest of several crops. Thus, the ability to work during days two to six would have been an invaluable opportunity for farmers and their families to tend to their farmlands.
However, when the seventh day arrives, a clear directive is issued: everyone must refrain from all labour activities and gather for a holy assembly before God. This cessation of work serves a significant purpose—God desires our undivided attention during worship. He understands that our focus can become diluted when we are preoccupied with earthly matters. Therefore, dear friends, as you engage in worship, prioritize giving God your full attention and devotion.
