Leviticus 23:8 NLT
“For seven days you must present special gifts to the Lord. On the seventh day the people must again stop all their ordinary work to observe an official day for holy assembly.”
Not burdensome
Every scripture contains an attribute of God. For instance, the above scripture reveals that God finds no delight in burnt offerings and animal sacrifices. King David echoes this sentiment in Psalm 51, articulating that God truly desires a genuine and contrite heart above animal sacrifices. If the Almighty were concerned about animal sacrifices, His directives would have likely required every individual to bring forth their special offering. Instead, we see a different approach in the instructions given to the people of Israel.
During the festival of unleavened bread, the Lord specifically requested that the entire house of Israel present only one special offering each day for seven days. This approach not only simplifies the ceremonial obligations but also underscores the idea that God values sincerity and heartfelt devotion over the mechanical observance of rituals.
Moreover, another significant aspect of this instruction reveals the nature of God’s love and concern for His people. Consider the implications if the special offering were mandated for every individual or family. The priests tasked with performing these rituals would undoubtedly have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of sacrifices, leading to exhaustion and potentially diminishing the sanctity of their sacred duties.
By limiting the offerings to a collective approach, God ensured that the responsibilities associated with the festival did not become burdensome or onerous for the priests or the households of Israel. Instead, He designed the festival of unleavened bread to be a time of joy and celebration, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. This thoughtful arrangement highlights God’s desire for a relationship with love and genuine worship rather than obligation and stress. In doing so, He allowed both the priesthood and the laypeople to fully participate in the joy of the festival, deepening their connection to Him and one another.
