Leviticus 23:31 NLT
“You must not do any work at all! This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.”
Resting is for all
Today’s referenced scripture delves into an essential aspect of the Day of Atonement. God’s clear instructions regarding work underscore the significance of this day. Specifically, He commands, “You must not do any work at all,” emphasizing the totality of this directive. This starkly contrasts the phrase “You must do no ordinary work,” highlighting that the prohibition is absolute and not limited to types of work deemed trivial or routine.
Moreover, it is essential to consider the broader implications of this command. The Lord’s instructions were explicitly directed towards the Israelites, creating a distinctive relationship between Him and His chosen people. This exclusivity implies that the norms set forth for the people of Israel do not necessarily apply to those from neighbouring nations who have not entered into a covenant with God.
In this light, while outsiders may act in ways inconsistent with the values of God’s kingdom—perhaps out of ignorance or lack of connection—it is far more concerning when those familiar with God’s teachings and commitments choose to stray from them. The expectations for those who have embraced faith and acknowledge God’s authority are considerably higher, requiring a conscious effort to align their actions with His divine will. This distinction serves as a reminder of the gravity of our responsibilities as believers within the framework of God’s directives.
