Leviticus 23:30 NLT
“And I will destroy anyone among you who does any work on that day.”
Anyone means anyone
Today’s referenced scripture is often misunderstood as an example of capital punishment instituted by the Lord. However, a careful examination reveals that the Lord did not instruct anyone to carry out this punishment, suggesting that it is not a form of capital punishment. Furthermore, the Lord did not specify a timeline for executing the sentence, indicating a deeper meaning. Notably, no sacrifices were mentioned to mediate a violation of this command. Why didn’t the Lord provide rituals for mediation? If such conciliation had existed, do you think the people of Israel would have chosen to observe the day of rest, or would they have preferred to pay the penalty instead?
The Lord clarified that the cessation of work was intended for one day, not indefinitely. In other words, they had plenty of days to carry out their work activities. However, anyone who refuses to rest may inadvertently choose to shorten their own lifespan, ultimately leading to consequences imposed by the Lord. Believers in the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ no longer need to observe the Day of Atonement because of the finished work of our Savior on the cross at Calvary. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the Lord’s instructions about rest and expect to receive His promise of a long life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I will honour Your instructions regarding rest at every point in my life. I ask that my actions do not lead to my destruction. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
