Leviticus 23:29 NLT
“All who do not deny themselves that day will be cut off from God’s people.”
How are you denying yourself?
God does not show favouritism, and this was communicated to Moses. The I AM WHO I AM made it clear that anyone among the people of Israel who refuses to deny themselves faces dire consequences of being cut off from the community of believers. What could lead someone to defy God’s instructions about denying themselves? The answer often lies in pride. If an individual feels that he has not committed any mistakes or errors, he would not see any reason to comply. By refusing to acknowledge their need for God’s mercy, they essentially label God as a liar—a title that is utterly unfitting for Him.
The denial that God sought from the people of Israel was straightforward; He asked them to abstain from food for a single day, from sunrise to sunset. The ask is quite different for you and I whom Jesus has redeemed with His blood. However, this call to self-denial does not imply that we should go without food and water for the entirety of our lives. Instead, Jesus urges us to submit our desires, ambitions and plans to God’s will (Matthew 16:24).
So when you engage in self-denial, to what end? Do you do it to prove a point to yourself or enemies, showcasing our faith as a means of judgment upon them? Or do you engage in self-denial to let our light shine, ultimately glorifying God and assisting those who are lost in finding their way to His kingdom? The motivation behind our actions is what truly matters in our walk with God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I may always act with wisdom and discernment, avoiding any behaviour that could lead me astray or harm myself or others. Please fill my heart with Your love and provide me with the clarity I need to make choices that honour You. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
