Leviticus 23:28 NLT
“Do no work during that entire day because it is the Day of Atonement, when offerings of purification are made for you, making you right with the Lord your God.”
Made for you
The Lord’s instructions are typically rooted in profound wisdom and serve a vital purpose—often aligned with our best interests. One such instruction was given regarding the Day of Atonement, a sacred time designated for the people to refrain from work. On the Day of Atonement, the people of Israel were instructed to abstain from all forms of labour, not just for a few hours or part of the day, but to rest the entire day completely. This complete cessation of work demonstrated their commitment to seeking forgiveness and reflecting on their past errors.
It is essential to understand that work cessation did not reconcile them with God. Instead, the purification offerings prescribed for this solemn occasion facilitated the reconciliation. It is worth noting that the people did not perform these offerings by themselves; instead, the priests performed them on their behalf. This arrangement underscored the belief that it was not the act of witnessing the sacrifices that mattered but rather the faith in the efficacy of those sacrifices.
In a parallel manner, Jesus Christ made a significant sacrifice for humanity. His offering was a definitive act of love and redemption, ensuring that your past mistakes and transgressions could be forgiven and erased. This profound gift invites each of us to reflect on our beliefs. Do you genuinely believe in this sacrifice? If you answer yes, let this belief manifest in your daily actions and communication with others.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a heart filled with gratitude for sending Jesus to atone for my sins. I earnestly pray that I fully believe in and embrace His sacrificial love for me. Please help me to live in a way that reflects this truth in all my actions and words. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
