Leviticus 23:22 NLT
“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”
A Call to Generosity and Compassion
Continuing the exposition of the referenced scripture, we will examine the phrase “I am the Lord your God” at the end of this verse. This phrase emphasizes that acts of generosity go beyond mere good deeds; they are, in essence, genuine worship. For the Israelites, following this command was a significant way to honour and show reverence to God.
These instructions were directed at farmers. Significantly, God did not specify that only one farmer, or only those with large farms, should follow this command. Instead, it was a directive for all farmers. Working together could help address the challenges the less privileged face. Ronald Reagan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” In other words, we should do our part and do it well. Friends, if you have a little to give, do so joyfully; if you can give more, do it gladly.
Leviticus 23:22 reminds us that God’s blessings are not meant for us alone—they are intended to flow through us to others. By leaving the corners of our fields unharvested, we demonstrate God’s love and provision in a world that desperately needs both. Generosity is not a loss; it is a gain. It deepens our trust in God, strengthens our communities, and reflects the very heart of God to a watching world. Friends, what “corners” can you leave today to show generosity and compassion?
