Leviticus 23:22 NLT
“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”
Small gestures. Big impact
Undoubtedly, the future remains an enigma, shrouded in uncertainty; yet, the Lord our God possesses a profound understanding of the immediate days ahead and the distant horizons beyond our sight. In the scripture referenced today, God unveiled what lay ahead while simultaneously conveying the expectations He held for the people of Israel when that future came to pass.
God asserted that He would ensure they reap the fruits of their labour. However, He emphasized this point with a critical command: they were to refrain from harvesting the grain along the fringes of their fields. Moreover, any produce that fell from the hands of the harvesters must be left behind, destined for the poor and the foreigners among them. Through this divine instruction, God underscored a vital principle: those who prosper must not ignore the suffering of the less fortunate.
The wisdom conveyed in this narrative unfolds in three distinct yet interconnected lessons: first, harvesters should exercise moderation and not let their zeal for abundance cloud their judgment; second, landowners must resist the urge to greedily claim all that is theirs, remembering their responsibility to those in need; and lastly, the poor and the foreigners are called to find contentment in whatever is left behind, embracing a spirit of gratitude amid their circumstances. This divine guidance ultimately crafts a compassionate community where empathy and sharing take precedence over mere accumulation.
