Leviticus 23:21 NLT
“That same day will be proclaimed an official day for holy assembly, a day on which you do no ordinary work. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.”
Are you ready for holy assembly?
In the Old Testament, the observance of festivals was a communal responsibility, not just for the priests. The instruction for everyone to refrain from ordinary work on the day when the priest presents the peace offering for the harvest festival highlights the kind of relationship God desired with the people of Israel. It was not merely about offering sacrifices; God sought a personal relationship with them.
Another important point from this scripture is the role of ordinary work. It seems clear that ordinary work often hindered the people of Israel from giving their full attention and devotion to God. So, friends, what kind of ordinary work do you need to let go of to enjoy the refreshing presence of the Lord fully? The people of Israel understood which ordinary tasks interfered with their holy gatherings. The responsibility now lies with you to discern and address the same in your life.
The directive to cease labour on the day the priest sacrificed the two oneyear old lambs might be a no-brainer. It posed a significant psychological and cultural hurdle for them. The notion of stepping back from work and embracing moments of relaxation and worship was foreign to the people. They had become accustomed to a life defined by incessant toil. Their existence revolved around rigorous daily labour, with little consideration for holidays, rest, or special occasions.
In our own lives, whenever God presents us with challenges that confront our established routines and ways of being, it’s essential to recognize the wisdom in yielding to His will. Such changes, though difficult, are often in our best interest, guiding us toward growth, reflection, and the restoration of balance in our lives. Embracing God’s guidance can lead to deeper spiritual fulfillment and a richer understanding of our purpose.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me release any burdens or distractions that may hinder my ability to fully enjoy the refreshing time that comes from Your presence. I ask for the strength to remove any worries related to my daily responsibilities and ordinary work so that they do not overshadow the peace and joy I find in communion with You. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
