Leviticus 23:18 NLT
“Along with the bread, present seven one-year-old male lambs with no defects, one young bull, and two rams as burnt offerings to the Lord. These burnt offerings, together with the grain offerings and liquid offerings, will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.”
Offering made for a greater purpose
The above scripture contains at leastbthree significant points to consider. First, the Lord specified different types of animals, all categorized as clean. Understanding the symbolic meaning of their blood is essential. For example, the blood of the lamb symbolizes the deep and covenantal relationship God desires to have with humanity. Conversely, the blood of the bull represents redemption. In the New Testament, through Christ, humanity experiences both a renewed relationship with God and liberation from the law of sin and death.
The second notable aspect is the differing quantities of the animals required. The Lord called for seven one-year-old lambs, one bull, and two rams. Importantly, these were not meant to be brought individually by each person in Israel but were to be presented collectively. This indicates that even under the law, compassion was evident. God highlighted the communal aspect of worship, where the burden of sacrifice was shared among the people.
Lastly, it is crucial to recognize that these offerings were ultimately dedicated to the Lord as burnt offerings, which are unique because every part of the animal is completely consumed by fire until nothing remains but ashes. This ritual signifies total dedication and sacrifice, as there is no portion for the priest or anyone else to eat. While some might view this practice as wasteful, it is essential to understand that the complete incineration of the offering is a profound symbol of devotion and surrender, emphasizing the idea that nothing is held back in the act of worship. Friends, do not hold back your worship. Give the Lord all your devotion for the harvest of the past, present, and future.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I ask that my offering be acceptable in Your sight as I seek no recognition or praise from others or societal standards. I pray that my offerings be guided by a pure heart, free from the need for validation and that they serve a greater purpose. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
