Leviticus 23:16 NLT
Keep counting until the day after the seventh Sabbath, fifty days later. Then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.
Keep counting
The instruction in the referenced scripture emphasizes a profound truth: even though the people of Israel were no longer together, they were urged not to let His love fade from their hearts. This directive from The I AM WHO I AM underscores the importance of remaining spiritually connected to Him, regardless of location or circumstance. God instructed the Israelites to continue counting until the day following the seventh Sabbath.
The fact that God did not assert that they gathered together for this counting reveals another God’s character. It indicates His belief in their ability to make the right choices independently, without constant oversight or reminders. This reflects a deep and abiding love from the Lord, who is fully aware of all things and their outcomes yet chooses to trust His people to act righteously. His trust demonstrates His loving nature, as He gives us the benefit of the doubt and encourages personal responsibility in our spiritual journeys.
Another important insight is that God did not delegate the responsibility of counting to Moses, Aaron, the Levites, or any other appointed leaders. Instead, He called upon each individual to participate in the counting process. This insistence that everyone be accountable reinforces the notion that, although God sets certain expectations for His people, each person is uniquely responsible for their relationship with Him. It serves as a reminder that following God’s ways is a personal commitment that requires daily effort and reflection.
Friends, it is essential to understand that the Lord desires a deeply personal walk with each of us. It is not the duty of our friends or fellow believers to nudge us along in our faith; instead, it is our responsibility to seek God actively. As the scripture states, “No one will need to teach his neighbour, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me” (Jeremiah 31:34; Hebrews 8:11). This speaks to the intimate and direct relationship that God wishes to establish with every individual.
