Leviticus 23:15 NLT
“From the day after the Sabbath—the day, you bring the bundle of grain to be lifted up as a special offering—count off seven full weeks.”
Seven full weeks
Interviewers often ask potential employees a recurring question about their availability to begin work. The timing of an individual’s start date is a pivotal point of discussion, and while candidates may have their expectations, the final decision rests with the employer. Typically, prospective employees are enthusiastic about commencing their roles immediately and eager to dive into their new responsibilities. However, the employer is ultimately responsible for determining when the new hire will officially begin.
Similarly, the directives presented in the referenced scripture offer clear guidance on the timing of the next festival. The Lord explicitly instructed the people of Israel to count seven complete weeks starting from the day after a Sabbath, when the offering of a bundle of grain is made. This command is not merely about counting time; it holds deeper significance related to the rhythms of worship and community life.
During the waiting period leading up to the festival, the people would find ample time to return to their daily activities, particularly their business and farming responsibilities. Given that they had just entered the harvest season, this time off would allow them to appreciate and enjoy the fruits of their labour without the immediate work pressures. However, this period also invited them to embrace their responsibilities more intentionally. The Lord entrusts them with an active role in their spiritual preparation by asking them to count the weeks.
Friends, it’s essential to recognize that worshipping God is ultimately a personal responsibility. It should not require constant reminders or pressure from others. Worship should flow naturally from one’s heart and mind, cultivating a genuine connection with the divine. It is this readiness and willingness to worship that enriches both personal faith.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I may embrace all my responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve. Please help me to be fully present in every moment, aware and attentive to the tasks at hand. Grant me the strength and wisdom to fulfill my obligations diligently, reflecting Your light in all I do. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
