Leviticus 23:3 NLT
“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of complete rest, an official day for holy assembly. It is the Lord’s Sabbath day, and it must be observed wherever you live.”
God is loving
Interestingly, God did not ask man to use most or all of the seven days for holy assembly. Instead, He instructed that six of the seven days be dedicated to personal economic activities. This shows that God is not self-centred. God did not rescue the people of Israel so that He could enlist them into forced labour. Instead, through the rescue, He restored their dignity.
Another essential aspect of His instructions is that the Lord required them first to understand that the seventh day is a complete day of rest. Before their deliverance, the Israelites had never known what proper rest was, as they worked tirelessly daily in Egypt. However, God did not take advantage of their situation because it was not in His character to do so. He gave them a deserving rest. Friends, we should never take advantage of anyone’s circumstances; instead, we should guide them in the path of righteousness for the sake of God’s name.
Finally, unlike the Israelites’ experience in Egypt, where they worked relentlessly for seven days without reaping the benefits, God did not defraud them for the results of their labour. This demonstrates that God is not deceitful in His relationship with any of us. He desires a genuine and meaningful relationship above all else. Friends, as God instructed the Israelites to observe the Sabbath wherever they lived, we should also strive to rest, as it is the Lord’s command.
