Leviticus: 22:9 NLT
“The priests must follow my instructions carefully. Otherwise, they will be punished for their sin and will die for violating my instructions. I am the Lord who makes them holy.”
For all
This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands, especially for the priests entrusted with sacred duties. The directive to “follow my instructions carefully” reflects God’s desire for His people to live in alignment with His will. This call to diligence is rooted in love, reminding us that obedience is not merely about rules but about fostering a relationship with our Creator. As stated in James 1:22, we are to be doers of the Word, responding to God’s love with our actions.
The warning about punishment highlights the seriousness of violating God’s commands, emphasizing that sin can lead to dire consequences. However, this warning is delivered from a place of love, as God seeks to protect His people from the harmful effects of sin. The phrase “will die for violating my instructions” highlights the reality of sin’s separation from God (Romans 6:23).
The declaration “I am the Lord who makes them holy” reveals the source of the priests’ holiness. It is not through their merit or actions but through God’s sovereign choice and grace. This shows God’s role as the one who sanctifies and sets apart His people for His purposes (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
Even in the face of a stern warning, the underlying theme is God’s grace. His instructions are given for our benefit and aim to foster a relationship of trust and intimacy. God desires for us to thrive in His presence (Hebrews 4:16).
