“or by touching a small animal that is unclean, or by touching someone who is ceremonially unclean for any reason.”
Fix your gaze on Christ
From a contemporary standpoint, a priest touching an unclean animal could symbolize an excessive preoccupation with worldly affairs or focus on the flesh. In Galatians 6:8, Paul reminded the brethren in Galatia, “Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.” This verse underscores the consequences of allowing the desires of our sinful nature to dictate our actions, leading to spiritual decay. Similarly, Romans 7:5 addresses the internal conflict that arises from succumbing to sinful inclinations, highlighting that this can divert us from God’s intended path for our lives. Moreover, Romans 8:6 offers a profound insight, stating, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” This verse calls attention to cultivating a mindset aligned with the Holy Spirit, fostering spiritual vitality and peace.
Furthermore, the concept of touching someone deemed ceremonially unclean extends the idea of maintaining spiritual purity by avoiding associations with those who lead us astray. This principle is clearly articulated in 1 Corinthians 15:33, which warns us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.'” This is a crucial exhortation to be mindful of our relationships and their influence on our spiritual health. Throughout Scripture, the call to uphold holiness is an overarching theme that resonates with believers across generations. It culminates in the New Testament, where Jesus emphasizes the necessity of navigating a worldly environment while remaining distinct from it. In John 17:14-16, He prays for us, highlighting the need to be “in the world but not of it.” This reinforces the critical importance of guarding our hearts and minds against sin and distractions that can lead us away from God.
In conclusion, the teachings of this scripture remind us, much like the priests of ancient times, that we are summoned to pursue a life marked by holiness and conscious separation from sin. We should focus on God’s divine and eternal truths rather than becoming ensnared by transient worldly distractions that threaten our spiritual integrity. By doing so, we align ourselves with God’s will and cultivate a more profound and enriching relationship with Him.

Heavenly Father, please help me to fix my gaze on You continually. May I never be encumbered by transient activities, but may my desire always be to please You. So, help me, God. Amen.
