Leviticus: 22:32 NLT
“Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who makes you holy.”
Do not bring shame
Every parent aims to convey to their children an essential message: the understanding of their identity and the legacy that comes with it. This message often revolves around the desire for their children to recognize and honour their family lineage, making choices that reflect well on their parents. This aspiration is not unique to any family or culture; it is a universal principle that resonates deeply with the desire for respect and dignity within familial relationships.
Similarly, this parental instinct mirrors a profound truth about our relationship with our heavenly Father. Just as earthly parents hope to see their children act in ways that bring pride rather than shame, God desires the same from us, His creations. His nature is devoid of shame, and He operates in ways that promote integrity and honour. As beings created in His image, we must uphold the moral and ethical standards that reflect His character.
Maintaining this standard may seem daunting, but it is essential to remember that the pathway laid out by the Lord is not shrouded in complexity. God has clearly outlined His expectations and the principles we should follow. Among these principles, one vital aspect stands out: the call to holiness.
However, it’s crucial to grasp that holiness is not merely a badge we can claim through our efforts or good deeds. The Lord explicitly states, “I am the Lord who makes you holy.” This declaration is a powerful reminder that our attempts to achieve holiness are inadequate. Through His grace and transformative power, we are made holy, allowing us to reflect His likeness in our thoughts, actions, and relationships.
Thus, as we endeavour to live lives honouring our earthly families and our divine heritage, we must rely on God’s guidance and strength to make us holy. It is not a task we can undertake alone but rather a journey of faith and dependence on the One who equips us to fulfill our calling.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray earnestly that my actions and words reflect Your love and grace and that I may never bring shame to Your holy name. Please help me to be mindful of my behaviour in all situations and grant me the wisdom to communicate with kindness and integrity. May everything I do be a testament to my faith in You, and may I always strive to honour You in my thoughts and deeds. So help me, Lord. Amen.
