Leviticus: 22:29 NLT
“When you bring a thanksgiving offering to the Lord, sacrifice it properly so you will be accepted.”
Sacrifice it properly
One important aspect of the Thanksgiving offering outlined in the law is that it was a requirement expected of all individuals, reflected in the use of the word “when” instead of “if.” This wording indicates that everyone anticipated participation in this form of worship, underscoring its communal significance.
Furthermore, it is significant that God did not specify a particular frequency for these thanksgiving offerings. This omission allows each individual the freedom to determine how often they would present their offerings, fostering a personal relationship with the act of giving thanks to God.
However, God’s primary concern was not the frequency of the offerings but rather the adherence to the prescribed procedures during the sacrifice. The Lord emphasizes that ensuring these sacrifices are conducted correctly is vital for the offeror’s acceptance. It reveals that what matters most is the intention and manner in which the offering is made rather than simply how often it is done.
Additionally, the offeror must understand that the thanksgiving offering is not meant for Aaron and his sons, the priests, but is ultimately a gift directed toward the Lord Himself. This distinction reminds the offeror that the act of sacrifice is an expression of gratitude and devotion to God rather than merely a ritualistic obligation towards the human intermediaries of the priesthood. In this way, the offering becomes a personal act of worship, reflecting the individual’s relationship with God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please accept my Thanksgiving offering through Jesus Christ. I pray that I never do anything that will undermine the efficacy of the finished work of Christ on the cross at Calvary. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
