Leviticus: 22:20 NLT
“Do not present an animal with defects, because the Lord will not accept it on your behalf.”
Do the right thing
Some may wonder why God, who created both perfect and imperfect animals, would refuse to accept sacrifices that are less than ideal. God’s decisions cannot be questioned but always have insights for living. If He had no criteria for sacrifices, we can envision what might have transpired among the people of Israel. They might have offered these less valuable sacrifices instead of the healthy, unblemished animals. This would have led to a troubling cycle where the sacred sacrifice was reduced to a mere transaction devoid of genuine reverence or connection to God.
However, the requirement for unblemished sacrifices serves a deeper purpose. It challenges the Israelites—and us today—to reflect on our attitudes and intentions. God knows that the Israelites know right from wrong and that was why the decision was put squarely on them. In the same vein, God knows you and I can differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. The Lord emphasizes that whoever chooses to contravene His requirement should know that the exercise has no desired outcome.
