Leviticus: 22:11 NLT
“However, if the priest buys a slave for himself, the slave may eat from the sacred offerings. And if his slaves have children, they also may share his food.”
Embrace God’s standard
The referenced scripture highlight God’s concern for individuals, particularly those whose rights have been trampled upon. For instance, there are stipulations regarding how a priest who acquires a slave should behave. Contrary to the typical treatment of slaves, the Lord commanded that priests must not regard their slaves with contempt. While it was generally accepted that slaves had no claim to the possessions of their masters, the Lord insisted that any priest who owned a slave must adopt a different approach. They were required to ensure that their slaves received sustenance from the sacred food allocated to them, and if these slaves bore children, the priest must also provide for the welfare of those children.
This portrays a significant insight for our daily lives: the ownership of slaves was not a requirement for any priest, as evidenced by the use of the word “if” in the text. This indicates that engaging in such practices was not necessary but a choice. It serves as a powerful reminder that we are not to conform to the ways of the world around us. Jesus, in Matthew 5:16, emphasizes this calling when He encourages us to let our light shine before others so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.
As followers of God, it is essential to remember that while we exist within the world, we are not to be defined by its standards. God has always extended His protection to the vulnerable and oppressed, and as His children, we are called to uphold that same commitment to justice and dignity for all individuals. Our actions should reflect His love and concern for every person, particularly those whose rights have been overlooked or violated.
