Leviticus 21:7 NLT
“Priests may not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, and they may not marry a woman who is divorced from her husband, for the priests are set apart as holy to their God.”
Living as God’s vessels
Did you know that God cares about all aspects of our lives? Today’s referenced scripture reveals that God did not want any priest to marry any woman. They were instructed to marry only women who had not been defiled through prostitution or divorce. So, what if these women found themselves in such conditions? Why can’t God give them a second chance? It is imperative to note that God didn’t invalidate them from marrying if they desired. The only exception is that the priest cannot consider them. The question is, why? The Lord said it is because they have been set apart for His service and glory.
Come to think of it, marrying a woman defiled by prostitution or who is divorced from her husband is not morally wrong for anyone. Still, if a priest should do it, such a union will constitute distractions. For instance, men who have had affairs with a woman defiled by prostitution might continue to send passes, and even the woman who is divorced might start making comparisons with her past and present or children from the previous marriage or marriages, which might constitute a nuisance in the new union. The list of these distractions is endless, and God gave this instruction to make life easier for those working in His vineyard.
Another aspect of the instruction is that God didn’t compel the priest. Otherwise, “must” would have been used instead of “may.” In other words, I AM WHO I AM does not force anyone, particularly the priest, but wants them to make an informed decision that will not impact their service in His presence. Let’s remember that, as priests, we are meant to reflect Christ’s perfection. We should strive to emulate His purity by resisting worldly pleasures and distractions. Let’s work to maintain the holiness entrusted to us so we can remain vessels fit for God’s service.
