Leviticus 21:6 NLT
“They must be set apart as holy to their God and must never bring shame on the name of God. They must be holy, for they are the ones who present the special gifts to the Lord, gifts of food for their God.”
Set apart as holy to God
In the Old Testament, the Lord appointed priests as His representatives. Like ambassadors must represent their governments well, the Lord emphasized that the priests represent Him well. They can do this by understanding that God has set them apart as holy, and they must remain so. For you and I, who have become priests through the finished work of Christ, we need to let our light shine among people so that our heavenly Father will be glorified.
Additionally, the Lord emphasized that the priests must not bring shame to God’s name. In other words, they were expected to live exemplary lives that glorify God. As followers of Christ, our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law; otherwise, entering God’s kingdom will be impossible.
The Lord required the priests to have exemplary character because no offerings were accepted without their involvement. If a priest or worshiper did not approach their offerings to God with sincerity and holiness, they risked dishonouring God’s name. Just as chefs must prepare their food with care and respect, our worship must be conducted with reverence for God’s holiness, reflecting His character and expectations in everything we do.
For instance, in Malachi 1:6-8, God expresses His displeasure with the sacrifices offered: “A son honors his father, and a servant honors his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due to me? If I am a master, where is the respect due to me?” The people were offering blind and defective animals, showing a lack of reverence for God. This demonstrates the importance of offering our best to God and approaching Him with integrity.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me never to bring shame to You in any way. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
