Leviticus 21:23 NLT
“Yet because of his physical defect, he may not enter the room behind the inner curtain or approach the altar, for this would defile my holy places. I am the Lord who makes them holy.”
Adhere to the limit of your responsibility
When the Lord instructed Moses about Aaron’s descendants that could officiate in the Tabernacle, there was no record that Aaron or his sons were physically challenged, but the One who was, is, and is to come can tell what lies in the future. So the Lord instructed that Aaron’s descendants with physical defects were not permitted to enter the holy of the holies, which lies beyond the inner curtain, nor could they approach the altar.
It is essential to understand that the Tabernacle has two distinct altars: the altar of burnt offerings, located in the outer court, and the altar of incense, situated within the Tabernacle itself. In prior verses, the Lord made it clear that those with physical limitations were barred from participating in activities associated with the altar of burnt offerings.
In the scripture referenced today, the Lord further emphasizes that entering the room behind the curtain—the Holy of the Holies—by those with disabilities would defile those holy spaces. This guidance reveals a profound principle: to stand before God, one must possess a state of completeness that transcends mere physical attributes.
Completeness, in this context, involves more than the absence of physical deformities; it encompasses the maintenance of spiritual holiness and righteousness. Therefore, we must be vigilant and intentional in our actions, ensuring that we do not inadvertently defile the sacredness that God has dedicated to Himself. In essence, we are called to uphold the integrity of our spiritual lives, mindful that every aspect must align with divine standards of holiness.
