Leviticus 21:2-3 NLT
“The only exceptions are his closest relatives—his mother or father, son or daughter, brother, or his virgin sister – who depends on him because she has no husband.”
The compassionate God
In the late 90s, I listened to a radio program hosted by Prophet G.O. Fakeye, where he requested prayers from his audience. At first, I was surprised because I thought someone of his stature would have everything taken care of. However, as I delved deeper into the scriptures and grew in my faith in Christ, I realized that everyone, including those dedicated to serving in God’s vineyard, needs prayers.
Today’s scripture reveals that priests and their families are not immune to trials and tribulations. If they were, the Lord wouldn’t have mentioned the possibility of them losing their sons and daughters while serving Him. Additionally, the scripture indicates that their unmarried sisters may struggle to find a partner and consequently meet an untimely demise. It’s essential to recognize that priests experience challenges, and their mental well-being is equally significant.
God’s provision for the priests to attend to their closest relatives’ burials demonstrates our Creator’s compassionate nature. It would have been hard to comprehend if the Lord had forbidden the priests from giving the last respect to their loved ones. This is because His word says we should honour our parents. With this exception, the Lord indicates that giving them last respect is part of the honour. However, please do not wait until your parents pass away. Honour them while they are alive to the best of your ability. May God give us all that is needed to honour them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You understand my pain and the daily obstacles I face. Please bring me comfort. I also pray for the comfort of the many priests who have suffered the loss of their closest family members. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
