Leviticus 21:13 NLT
“The high priest may marry only a virgin.”
Why all the strict rules?
We live in a time when rules are regarded as overbearing, especially if we are at the receiving end. However, not all rules apply to everyone, even today. For instance, if you are not behind the wheel, police can not cite you for overspeeding. Similarly, the instruction encapsulated in today’s referenced scripture was not for everyone and certainly not for all priests. It was only for the high priest. However, since no one knows who will be a high priest, it may have become the norm for the priesthood.
Also, the Lord did not instruct that women who are no longer virgins cannot get married. Instead, the instruction indicates that when the high priest wants to get married, his affection must only be for a virgin. Another insight is that the Lord said, “Only a virgin,” which means that the high priest was not expected to marry more than one.
The question is, why is there a strict rite for the high priest? He was a type of our blessed Saviour who had no blemish but was perfect in all aspects. The kind of perfection that God demanded from the high priest was physical; however, the Lord demands perfection beyond the physical from you and me. He desires truth in our inward part.
