Leviticus 21:10 NLT
“The high priest has the highest rank of all the priests. The anointing oil has been poured on his head, and he has been ordained to wear the priestly garments. He must never leave his hair uncombed or tear his clothing.”
Be of good cheers
Shakespeare penned the lines “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown” in his play Henry IV Part Two, highlighting the immense burden of responsibility that comes with leadership. This concept is not limited to royalty, as high priests in ancient Israel also carried significant duties to God, their fellow priests, and the people.
In the referenced scripture, God emphasizes the high priest’s elevated responsibilities compared to other priests. The high priest was anointed and adorned with a distinct priestly garment to symbolize their consecration. They were also instructed to maintain a well-groomed appearance and refrain from tearing their clothes for any reason. These regulations were in place because the high priest served as the intermediary between humanity and God, offering gifts and sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins on behalf of the people. The high priest needed to maintain a composed and dignified demeanour, as outward displays of distress could potentially undermine the people’s faith in divine justice.
As believers, we are regarded as God’s chosen and consecrated priesthood, entrusted with specific roles and responsibilities. Like every human, we are not immune to life’s challenges. However, God desires that we not allow our challenges to moderate who we are. Being emotional about our unbecoming situation is human, but it must never be the norm. Regardless of what you are going through, always internalize the word of our Lord and Saviour in John 6:33, in which He said, “Be of good cheers.”
