Leviticus 20:8 NLT
Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord who makes you holy.
Holy living
No one keeps anything that holds no value. So, when we keep anything, it is because of its intrinsic or extrinsic value. In today’s referenced scripture, the Lord commanded the people of Israel to keep all His decrees. In other words, they must treat His decrees as valuables because they are. They are not to cherry-pick what to keep but must keep all.
The Lord does not want them to know them offhand. Instead, He desires that these decrees be put into practice. There is a need to understand that Christian living takes work and consistent effort. However, we must realize that salvation is a gift, and our righteousness is like a filthy rag before Him. This means that we should not think that our efforts at holy living depend solely on what we can do in terms of our works; if we allow ourselves to think so, it is pride, and the end is never good.
We also understand that the Bible says that it’s not by works that man should boast. All of these point to the fact that as much as we must take the steps to put God’s decrees into practice, we also have to depend on the Father. Phil 2:13 sums it up beautifully: God works in us to do His will accordingly, and we need to commit daily to Him to continue keeping us on His path.
