Leviticus 20:14 NLT
“If a man marries both a woman and her mother, he has committed a wicked act. The man and both women must be burned to death to wipe out such wickedness from among you.”
Abstain from wickedness
In Leviticus 20, a noticeable pattern exists within the instructions. The instructions begin with “if,” and they are based on the actions of men. This suggests that if a man fulfills his responsibilities, it significantly increases the likelihood of those around him also doing the right thing. Conversely, if he neglects his duties, his mistakes can lead others to ruin.
One factor that can lead a man to fail is greed. Greed within a community of believers can be likened to a festering wound that has the potential to devastate the body of Christ. It is through greed and uncontrolled desires that a person might even consider marrying both a woman and her mother. The lack of self-discipline in individuals’ lives can also destroy their destinies.
For example, if Joseph had succumbed to his impulses and lacked self-control, he could have engaged in a relationship with his master’s wife, potentially endangering the entire generation he was destined to save. As Christians, it is vital to acknowledge that many destinies are interconnected with our own. Therefore, we must carefully consider our impulses and exercise self-discipline when making decisions. Furthermore, we should redirect our focus from what might seem like better alternatives to what we currently possess.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me beware of greed, destroy every seed of greed in me, and increase my self-control in Jesus’ name, amen.
