Leviticus 19:8 NLT
Anyone who eats it on the third day will be punished for defiling what is holy to the Lord and will be cut off from the community.
God is not cruel
When I started secondary school, my father said I should never walk home after school. He promised to pick me up or send a driver from his office. Despite this instruction, one day, I joined a group of my peers walking home to their respective staff quarters in then Unife. After just 5 minutes of walking, I was surprised to see my father’s car approaching. When he exited the car, I got rewarded for my disobedience. This experience puzzled me, as I couldn’t understand why trekking home was such a big deal when all the other kids were doing it.
Likewise, how is eating a meal on the third day such a bad idea and carrying untold consequences? According to the referenced scripture, the endeavour carried the death penalty. This may seem harsh, but did you know that the meal had no preservative, and by the third day, it must have developed maggot? Anyone who consumes such food does not consider the impact on his health, let alone the infectious diseases that such an unguided decision will inflict on the community.
Some people don’t care about the impact of their actions on other people. They care less about their close relatives or brethren as long as it feels right. Friends, how often do you reflect on how your actions might negatively affect those around you? You can’t say it is my body or it is my life, and I can do as I like. Remember, you are not alone in this life. You are connected with others in one way or another. More importantly, you are a follower of Christ, and you must let God’s light in you shine everywhere.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to resist any temptations and desires that may lead me away from your love and presence. Grant me the wisdom to discern between what is truly valuable and what may cause separation from You. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
