Leviticus 19:26 NLT
“Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards.”
Beware of copy and paste
It’s important to remember that some instructions from God are universal, applying to all individuals, while others are specific and intended for particular groups. The scripture mentioned today conveys an instruction explicitly tailored for the people of Israel, aimed at setting them apart from the inhabitants of the land designated by God for their occupancy.
Why did God instruct the people of Israel not to trim their beard or hair in the temples? Surely, it wasn’t because God cared less about their hygiene. During ancient times, the trimming of beards and hair within temples was associated with idol worship and practices related to mourning. By cautioning the people of Israel against adopting the customs of those around them, God highlighted the importance of discerning the practices we emulate and emphasized that not everything that appears good is aligned with godly principles.
Prayer
Dear God, please help me to be cautious in adopting any practices, particularly those that are not from You, regardless of how popular they might be. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
