Leviticus 19:20 NLT
“If a man has sex with a slave girl whose freedom has never been purchased but who is committed to become another man’s wife, he must pay full compensation to her master. But since she is not a free woman, neither the man nor the woman will be put to death.”
God of compassion
A critical aspect of God’s warnings is that they often begin with the word ‘if,’ indicating that whatever follows is not meant to be the standard behaviour in human relationships. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we must remain vigilant and avoid engaging in such behaviours, no matter how unlikely they may seem.
In today’s scripture, it is highlighted that there were enslaved individuals in the community of Israel. It’s crucial to understand that God did not enslave them; instead, it was a human construct. If it had divine approval, The I AM WHO I AM wouldn’t have prohibited any Israelite from becoming a slave to another (Leviticus 25:39). Therefore, any enslaved person in the community of Israel must be a foreigner.
Even for the foreigners in such an arrangement, God upheld their dignity. Psalm 136 states that God remembers us in our low estate, and the concept of “us” includes everyone, not just a select few. Friends, whatever privilege human constructs deprive you, know that God has your back. He cares for all of us.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me live my life for You and thank You for dignifying me even in my low estate. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
