Leviticus 19:16 NLT
“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. Do not stand idly by when your neighbour’s life is threatened. I am the Lord.”

Let the buck stops with you
In everyday living, it’s crucial to remember that although we can’t always control what others say about people, we can control what we choose to communicate to others. Take, for instance, the COVID-19 pandemic, during which individuals were mindful of their actions, refraining from sneezing or coughing indiscriminately to prevent the spread of the virus. Those infected had to quarantine to prevent further transmission, underlining the importance of tending to one another’s well-being.

Similarly, in the referenced scripture, the Lord instructed the community of Israel to take responsibility for refraining from spreading harmful gossip. When we propagate false stories about others, we not only damage their reputation but also harm their relationships. As followers of Christ, it is incumbent upon us to refrain from slandering anyone, not only within our immediate community but also in every aspect of our lives. The reason is that while material losses can often be recovered, a tarnished reputation might never fully mend despite concerted efforts. Therefore, let’s act with integrity and compassion in all our interactions.

Prayer
Dear God, I ask for your guidance in helping me be mindful of the words I speak about others. Please grant me the wisdom to use my words to uplift and encourage those around me rather than spreading negativity or causing harm. Please help me to be a source of support and kindness in the lives of others. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
