Leviticus 19:16 NLT
“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. Do not stand idly by when your neighbour’s life is threatened. I am the Lord.”
Help out
A while ago, one of my managers shared an experience he had. Many years ago, he witnessed a car accident on his way to a job interview. Instead of leaving the victims unattended, he stayed to call 911 and waited until the paramedics and other officials arrived. After everything was taken care of, he went for his interview. Even though he explained the reason for being late, the interviewer didn’t believe him. My manager said he was glad he did the right thing.
If people who are not Christians understand that it is wrong to leave anyone in distress unattended, you and I, who are Christians, have no excuse to do less. In the referenced scripture, the Lord instructed that no Israelites should stay idle when their neighbour’s life is at risk. It’s important to note that the Lord didn’t say that the neighbour must fit our criteria or come from specific demographics, race, gender, creed, or socioeconomic status. As Christians, everyone is our brethren because Jesus came to save the world. Just because my neighbour is unkind does not mean I should ignore them when they are in trouble.
Prayer
Dear God, I pray that I will have the compassion and empathy to treat my neighbour with the kindness and care I would want for myself. I will not turn away from my neighbour if their life is in danger, and I will offer any help that I can provide. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
