Leviticus 19:13 NLT
“Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay.
Today and not tomorrow
I remember a scene from a show I saw on Prime Video. In the scene, a bar worker respectfully asked her employer about her monthly salary, which was already 15 days overdue. The employer’s response was quite shocking. Instead of addressing the legitimate concern, the employer callously remarked that the country owed its employees six months’ salaries while she only owed one month. What struck me the most was that the employer had the means to pay but callously refused to do so.
Although this was a scripted scene in a TV show, it’s unfortunate that it likely portrays real-life situations many people have experienced. The unsettling behaviour runs contrary to what the Lord commanded in the concluding part of the referenced scripture. In the verse, God expresses His disapproval of such behaviour. As followers of Christ, we must exemplify compassion and fairness through our actions. Part of this includes ensuring workers receive their due wages on time, as they rely on these earnings to support their families.

Heavenly Father, I pray I will not abuse my authority but utilize it to comfort other people’s lives. So, help me, Lord Jesus. Amen.
