Leviticus 19:12 NLT
“Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the Lord.”
Hallow be Thy name, O Lord
In today’s scripture, it is emphasized that the name of the Lord must be honored and hallowed. Honouring God’s name means refraining from swearing falsely. It’s important to note that the instruction doesn’t explicitly prohibit using God’s name for swearing, but it emphasizes that it must not be for the wrong purpose. As followers of Christ, it’s crucial to consider whether it’s appropriate to swear by using God’s name. Since Jesus serves as our example, it’s essential to take cues from His teachings and actions on every matter, including this. When it comes to swearing, it is clear that it is not permitted for any follower of Christ. To reinforce this point, Jesus instructed that our yes should mean yes, and our no should mean no. This guidance underscores the importance of sincerity and truthfulness in our words and actions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray I will not swear with Your name because it must always be hallowed. Please help me always base my yes and no on the Holy Spirit’s leading to avoid inconsistencies. So, help me, Lord Jesus. Amen.
